Sustainable Swaps: Switching to toothpaste tablets

Did you know that it can take between 500-700 years for a toothpaste tube to biodegrade? This means that every toothpaste tube that you have ever bought in your life is out there in landfill. As toothpaste tubes were invented in 1889 every single toothpaste tube remains on the earth day and this will be true until at least 2389! This fact becomes even more disturbing when you learn that 1.5 billion tubes of toothpaste go to landfill every year. This plastic harms animals in the ocean and the microplastic the tubes break down to become can even enter human food chains- through the fish some people eat. For the health of our planet, the animals living on it and ourselves it is essential that we try to make a change.

Switching to toothpaste tablets

When I first heard about toothpaste tablets I felt weirdly cautious as it was an idea that felt so different to me. I was really concerned that they weren't going to protect me teeth in the way they needed, that they'd be hard to use or that they wouldn't contain fluoride. However, these worries were completely unnecessary as since we started using them at home they have been nothing but wonderful. The tabs that we use come in a paper bag- so completely recyclable- and leave my mouth feeling so zingy and refreshed. All you need to do is wet your (hopefully bamboo toothbrush) with a little bit of water and then give the tablet a bit of a chew and your good to go! It really is as easy as that and the one's that we use contain fluoride so your teeth are fully protected too.

This change is so simple and easy to make, the tablets really aren't expensive and you will be making such a difference to the environment. Please make a change and start using toothpaste tablets!
